It’s not that he was cruel or mean
It’s not that he was ugly
It’s not that he was crude, unclean,
Or that he acted smugly
It’s what he was but didn’t admit
It’s what he didn’t acknowledge
It’s what he failed to see or name
As though he needed college
But insight, it is rarely learned
Awareness comes through suffering
We duck and run, avoiding pain
And romance serves as buffering
What seems so clear to you and me
Is not so clear to others
Ignorance is bliss, and free
of snags for star-struck lovers
Insight
