Halloween prayer

Do you fear the sleep that comes on Halloween night?
Not for nightmares, sugar crashes, growing up, or disillusionment.
But the neighbors that stand in your room
Drab robes and empty eyes
Compelling you to join them in this year’s rituals.

I pray for you
That fear should be a choice, a thrill
A scary movie with popcorn
and afterwards your heart rate drop down to resting while you enjoy
Colorful electric candles on the sill.

I pray for your soul
That you should keep your personality intact
Your memories as they are
That they should leave you out of this year’s black mass
Letting you enjoy a candy, or two, and an unperturbed snooze.

I pray for your body
That this year you will not taste the athame
You will not be forced to eat strange flesh
That you could enjoy a quiet fall night
Let your old ritual scars fade
Listen to the sound of happy trick or treaters without crying
That you could feel safe enough to unclench yourself.

I pray for you, lonely one.
You can trick or treat at my door and receive whatever prayer you need.
