Autumn Equinox

Post by hidden voices »

It's 9pm the day is over,
Nightime falls before my eyes,
Darkness creeps in through the window,
Outside falls silent, a ghostly quiet.

Good people retire onto the sofa,
Tvs turn on, a meal is made.
But somewhere out there in the darkness,
The circle gathers, the ceremony begins.

Cloaked in robes as black as night,
The Beast is summoned to bless the feast.
Blood is shed into the chalice,
Ready to drink in his honour.

The childlike supplicants are ushered
Before the ceremonial altar
All dressed in white their eyes glazed over.
They don't resist or even cry.

Full to the brim with milk so doctored,
They have no will of their own left to fight.
And one by one they play their part,
Whether victim or abuser or sacrifice.

As the night grows darker they begin to scream,
As the pain courses through their tender bodies.
It's them not me I don't remember
Feeling pain or anything at all.

For I have floated to the trees,
Safe and hidden by Mother Nature.
Beneath the leaves that are my protection,
I'm safe from harm, I feel no pain.

And when eventually it's over,
I return once more into my body,
Feeling pain and fear but without memories
Of what was done or where we've been.

And when the ceremony is over,
They wrap us up and take us back.
Tend our wounds and feed us chocolate,
Soothe our minds and deny it happened.

And we are left to wonder was it real or just imagined?
My memories are hazy but my body remembers.
How many times did this happen to us,
I don't know, don't remember, doubt myself.

Know only that once in double figures
I changed from victim into abuser
And it is this I can never forget or forgive,
How I chose to harm rather than be harmed myself.

So as the nights draw in I remember,
The fear is rising them Equinox approaches.
I do not wish to still exist to relive that dreadful rite again.
Long to escape and find an ending, in death be free forevermore.
