The Glory of Love

Post by peaceseeker »

I was thinking about how life is full of ups and downs, struggles and triumphs, how there is a cyclical aspect to life that people have recognized for millennia. The ancients spoke of the Wheel of Fortune to describe this sense that things will always go up and down. Just when things seem at their worst, they tend to improve. Just when things seem at their best, they tend to fade a bit. It's just a part of life, I guess, and as I go further down the road of healing, I find that the ups and downs are not quite so up or down ... that there is an overall leveling out in finding more peace within.

Well, this old song started running through my head: "The Glory of Love." It's been sung by various people, but the Bette Midler version is the one playing in my brain's background today. It's lyrics are so simple but so profound.

Just thought I'd share the lyrics. It's somehow comforting that "having the blues a little" is just a part of the rhythm, alongside laughing and winning.

"The Glory of Love"

You've got to give a little, take a little,
and let your poor heart break a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

You've got to laugh a little, cry a little,
until the clouds roll by a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

As long as there's the two of us,
we've got the world and all it's charms.
And when the world is through with us,
we've got each other's arms.

You've got to win a little, lose a little,
yes, and always have the blues a little.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.
That's the story of, that's the glory of love.

I remember that one! Now I can hear Bette Midler singing it in my head. :D
I like the part that says you've got to give a little, take a little, let your poor heart break a little. Sometimes as survivors we work so hard at protecting our hearts, and we are afraid to let anyone in, because there's a chance the poor heart might break a little (or a lot!) We miss out when we don't let others in, though. That reminds me of the song that has been in my head this week, Josh Groban's Hidden Away: (I pretend Josh is singing it straight to me, reminding me not to stay hidden away.)

Over mountains and sky blue seas
On great circles, will you watch for me?
The sweetest feeling I've got inside
I just can't wait to get lost in your eyes

And all these words that you meant to say
Held in silence day after day
Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave
Please, don't keep them hidden away

Sing it out so I can finally breathe in
I can take in all the same
Holding out for something I believe in
All I really need today

I want to free your heart, I want to see your heart
Please, don't keep your heart hidden away

You're a wonder, how bright you shine
A flickered candle in a short lifetime
A secret dreamer that never shows
If no one sees you then nobody knows

And all these words you were meant to say
Held in silence day after day
Words of kindness that our poor hearts crave
Please, don't keep them hidden away

Sing it out so I can finally breathe in
I can take in all the same
Reaching out for someone I believe in
All I really need today

I want to feel your love, will you reveal your love?
Please, don't keep your love hidden away
I want to free your heart, I want to see your heart
Please, don't keep your heart hidden away

peace
