I think it took me a few years to summon the courage to try chat. Then I find it's a perfectly benign and friendly environment, you can just sit by if you want to, and it's very welcoming. Nice to get to know people a little better, too! Now just to remember who has a new puppy and who doesn't...

Conversation topics vary between general and more forum-specific - but it's what you want it to be. Last night I had fun chatting with BookLover (/waves!) about cooking, dance rehearsals and Marvel films. I think there's something for everyone.
