Surrendering pieces of my soul
As I struggled to live each day
Quietly accepting all they did and said
Because I didn’t want to end up dead
Taking it in and in and in
As quietly as I could do
Accepting all of their blame
Shouldering all of the shame
I just want to live
Dreaming of breaking free
Burying so much of me
Protecting me for someday far
So little left that I know as me
Being whoever they want me to be
Trying to please everyone but myself
Reading their words and moods
Learning to hide in front of their face
Pacing myself to win this race
Breaking free and finding truth
Dealing with that is so hard
Almost breaking completely apart
How on earth do I make a new start
What do I do with the guilt and shame
How do I forgive me for playing their game
I tell my story and give back the blame
I take back my life and throw off the shame
Hold my head high and stand up straight
Let go of the self torment and hate
Remember to breathe deep and free
Allow myself to rediscover me
Cry as I need to and rage if I must
Congratulate my self for my life
Be happy as much as I can
Learn to be my own friend
Never let them abuse me again.
