Cretins

Post by Oceantide »

We are too tired to think or write
We are too tired to play
We think that sleep is always right
And yet it stays away

But stop to feel and tears well up
We miss our lover’s body
The close embrace so strong and kind
We feel adrift and shoddy

How should we grieve the loss of touch
How can we live so lonely?
Though others find their way at last
We question our own journey

Should we be cretins without thought?
Should we just trust our senses?
If I could simply just pretend
I’d never be pretentious
(but I may be contentious)

I rarely interpret my own poems, or read them to my t, but today I did, because I am still trying to process my recent breakup.

I think my poet part is saying I can't go back into denial. I can't "un-see" what I see. As much as I'd love to, I can't be merely sensual and turn my brain off when I'm in a relationship, because my awareness will come out sideways (I'll become "contentious").
