Ode to My Illness

I don’t wish to banish you from my grey matter.
I want you out before my brain cells shatter.
I won’t go the way of the mad hatter.
But I will hear what you have to say.
You need to know that you matter,
And I need to know why you stay.
You’re part of my chemistry, my mind’s momentum.
Show me who I was and who I will become.
Help me see what others have inside them
So their eyes can be my mirrors.
Cloud my vision, wipe my system—
Back into focus—all is clear.
An arm, a leg, a rib cage, pinned beneath a tree—
You are trapped, broken, but still, you are me.
No amputation, but we can be free.
I’ll part the branches—you’ll see the sun.
I don’t know why you came to me,
But you are not my hired gun.
