Thanks for posting this thread 😀😀

My favorite song about overcoming abuse is

Artist Trivium
Album Asendancy 2006
Song A gunshot to the head of trepidation

Favorite lyrics are

You starve your children of neglect and feed their bellies with fear, concussion bat to the brain witness to a battered mother. A broken home just as you were raised with fist raised up to your children.

No more will your family fear. No more will your family fear. A gunshot to the head of trepidation my promise if you ever lay a finger.

Open fire on the desire of the man. Open fire with strife we'll strike down the hand. If I can't make you see the damage you've made then I'll make you wish you'd never been born.

Yesterday my playlist was Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare; Judas Priest: British Steel; Judas Priest: Screaming for Vengeance; Judas Priest: Ram It Down; Jethro Tull: Aqualung; Genesis: Wind & Wuthering; Genesis: Trespass; Genesis: Invisible Touch. Alice Cooper is a good warm up for the heavy metal, but also now a big Alice Cooper fan, this is very skilfully done. Mostly 1980s, 1970s era music because on audio cassette.
Love the playlist!! Please listen to Trivium's Asendancy album and Asking Alexandria's From Death To Destiny album. If your into metal and 80's metal like I am (Pantera and Metallica) tattoos covering my entire forearms then you will relate and definitely feel like you belong with these bands

The Wall (album)
Artist: Pink Floyd
Year: 1980
Producer: Bob Ezrin

It's a dark piece of music. But it was the beginning of my journey of healing, years before I could even begin to face my childhood. It made me want to get beyond that inner wall and rescue the little boy still cowering behind it. I don't listen to it much anymore. Some of the songs still express aspects of how I feel sometimes, especially right now.

And Suzanne Vega, whose music I find calming, inspiring, beautiful.

From "St. Clare" on the album "Songs in Red and Gray":

Bold little bird,
Fly away home.
Could I but ride herd
On the wind and the foam.

And all of the souls
That curl by the fire,
They never know
All man's desire.

Artist: Suzanne Vega
Year: 2001
Producer: Rupert Hine

And does anybody remember Shelby Flint?

I've always loved 2pac.
He just...he could just communicate so much with so little. Some songs of his bring you to tears, and some just seem to make you feel like you're made of steel.

"Keep your head up"
"L0rd Knows"
"Dear Mama"

One song that really helped me in a dark place was "White Manz World". It sounds like it's only for ethnic people, but in reality, it's for everyone and anyone who feels unheard. But it may really trigger, so just be cautious.

------------------------------------------

Chopped & Screwed:
Chopped and screwed is a style of music out of TX, where they take certain songs and alter them to have a unique sound. Some songs alone just cause a peace, calming euphoria from the way they sound. Some songs just make you smile out of nowhere. I think the odd sound and rhythm may touch a center of the brain, because your favorite song, chopped and screwed, just sounds like heaven.

Almost any artist or song has a chopped and screwed variation on youtube, so give it a try.

DJ Sprite is a personal favorite.

----------------------------------------

Gwar:
The heavy metal band. They are just so goofy and crazy and don't take themselves seriously at all that their "hardcore" music ends up making you laugh at the pure absurdity of it all. MAY trigger, so be wary. But I think you'll just end up laughing at their silliness.

I'm a bit on repeat of Soul Asylum - Runaway Train:

So tired that I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep.....

& so it goes on. Resonates just now.

Tori Amos - Silent All These Years
"Sometimes I hear my voice and it's been silent all these years."

Sick Puppies - Maybe
"So, why does it feel so wrong to reach for something more? To want to live a better life... What am I waiting for?"

Twenty One Pilots - Holding on to You
"Tie a noose around your mind tight enough to breathe find and tie it to a tree and tell it: You belong to me, this ain't a noose it is a leash and I have news for you, you must obey me!"

Lifehouse- Nobody Listen, and Flight
Lana Del Rey - I Can Fly
Katy Perry- Rise
Daughtry- Undefeated
Sia- Alive
Simon Webbe - I Ain't You
Des' ree- You Gotta Be
Demi Lovato - Skyscraper
Barbara Streisand - My Heart Belongs To Me

I hope someone here will find cathartic release from my little playlist here. This thread is a great idea. Music is very healing. Idk what I'd do without my music. <3

Ps. My alias is actually from a combination of two Tori Amos songs, as a matter of fact. Marianne and Agent Orange

Song: The Strays
Sleeping With Sirens
Album: Madness
Producer: John Feldmann
2015

"My whole life they said I'd be nothing
But I'm something
And I would rather be the stray
Than be nothing to no one at all

Hold on, don't look back
You know we're better, we're better than that
Lost and thrown away
You know we're better, we're better than that

'Cause we are the strays (woah oh oh)
We are the strays"

Song: One More Light
Linkin Park
Album: One More Light
Producer: RAC, Brad Delson & Mike Shinoda
2017

"Who cares if one more light goes out
In the sky of a million stars?
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone's time runs out
If a moment is all we are?
We're quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well, I do"

Song: Temporary
Amber Pacific
Album: Truth in Sincerity
Producer: Martin Feveyear
2007

"It's just
Temporary
But give it time to know it's real
Before you're ready
To face it and begin to heal
Your life's worth living
For someone give their all to feel
Their heart's stopped beating
So give yourself another chance to change
With tomorrow comes a better day"

Title: Run

...I wouldn't hurt you, like the world did me
Keep you safe, I'd keep you sweet
Everything that I went through,
I'm grateful you won't have to do....

P!nk wrote this song for her daughter.

Thank you for sharing this! It made me cry buckets. I've always loved P!nk, but I haven't been able to check out her more recent work.

--

I also have a few songs that really get me through the day.

Title: Geodes
Album: The Geography of Light
Artist: Carrie Newcomer
Year: 2008

Some say geodes were made from pockets of tears
Trapped away in small places for years upon years
Pressed down and transformed, 'til the true self was born
And the whole world moved on, like the last notes of a song
A love letter sent without return address

Title: Japanese Bowls
Album: Heaven Below
Artist: Peter Mayer
Year: 2010

So now every old scar shows
From every time I broke
And anyone’s eyes can see
I’m not what I used to be

But in a collector’s mind
All of these jagged lines
Make me more beautiful
And worth a much higher price

I love Carrie Newcomer and Peter Mayer. Their music is spiritual, gentle, and poetic. Sometimes cheerful, sometimes contemplative, but always full of a deep, profound joy in the midst of pain. I chose these two songs because they remind me that even though I'm broken and functionally useless right now, I'm still a work in progress and someday I might find or generate beauty from what everyone else sees as worthless.

Title: Cope
Album: Wake Up Dreaming
Artist: Stephanie Mabey
Year: 2012

You know any minute, things could get better
But for now we hold our pieces together

O-oh, we all cope
Everybody's got their ways
Yeah I know I've got mine
O-oh, the blinds are closed
You're doing anything it takes
To get you through the night
We all need hope
And until we're there
We cope

I love the slightly upbeat sound of this song. It reminds me that so many people are quietly desperate, doing everything they can to hold their heads above the water and smile. I can listen to it in different modes: ironically, cynically, earnestly, or compassionately. I sing it while washing dishes as a form of meditation. I am not alone.
I remain, for now,
Quietly
